Features Explained

Import Point-Cloud Data

Polygon data is created, using measurement point-cloud data. Upon polygon generation, polygon reduction, hole filling, and smoothing are performed simultaneously according to a specified precision.

Supported file formats ASCII, STL, SWL, AC *,
and other formats can be supported separately.

Import CAD Data

Measurement point-cloud data alone is enough for spScan to perform reverse engineering. However, when CAD data for the object is available, it can be used as a reference for reverse engineering and/or the data itself can be used for non-reverse engineering parts (i.e., partial reverse engineering).

Supported CAD file format is JAMA-IS (IGES formulated by Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc.). However, by specifying the original CAD, other IGES files can also be supported.

Coordinate Alignment

When using CAD data, one must be aware that point-cloud data and CAD data have different coordinate systems. Therefore, point-cloud data and CAD data must be aligned be for reverse engineering is performed. The Position Alignment feature is available in two formats:

Position Alignment Features
  1. Restricting specified elements (Holes, planes, cylinders, etc.)
  2. Minimizing marginal error summation between point-cloud data and CAD data (best-fit).

Polygon Modification Features

Using polygon generated from measurement point-cloud data, polygons can be modified to meet the reverse engineering purpose.

Main Features

Partial Deletion, Polygon Thin-Out. Smoothing, Hole-Filling, Edge Fixing

Grouping

By computing polygon curvature, automatic grouping (surface structure definition) is performed. Curvature radius used for grouping can be precisely controlled.

Boundary Generation

Using polygon curvature group boundaries, boundary curves for CAD data can be automatically generated. Depending on the reverse engineering purpose, face subdivision and/or curve modification can be performed as desired.

Reverse Engineering Face Generation

Surface generation by both automatic or manual means is available, using boundary information and measured point-cloud data. In the automated process, spScan will automatically generate boundary surfaces or trimmed surfaces as necessary. Base surface types from planes, cylindrical surfaces and free-form surfaces are available.

Reverse Engineered Face Evaluation

Evaluation of the reverse engineered faces can be done to ensure the data will serve its purpose.

The main evaluation features include Error Margin Color Mapping against polygons, Surface-to-surface error margin checking, Surface-to-surface angle evaluation, and Zebra mapping.
